Blue Ribbon Farm Fish

Article by Curtis Robert Tyree of the Bargain Hunter

Tuscarawas County is home to many types of agriculture, from livestock to produce. One newer form of agriculture that many want to gain traction is aquaculture, or the farming of of the water. Fish farms have become highly profitable way for people to use excess land.

"The average yield per acre with aquaculture is $14,000," said Marty Domer, owner of Blue Ribbon Farm Fish and founder of the Fish Farmers of Ohio Association. "The amount made far surpasses anything else."

Blue Ribbon Farm Fish is a unique operation in fish farming. "We are the only facility in Ohio that will not only process and distribute the harvest from your farm, but we will also come to your pond and harvest it for you." said Domer. "On top of that we will also help you set up your pond, provide you with fingerlings [baby fish], and provide you with feed. To help you get started, we will even come out and give estimates on your potential yield. We can do pretty much everything for you."

"Ohio has the perfect climate to raise a wide variety of fish. Oho is the number one in the country for growing Yellow Perch, number four for Large Mouth Bass and number six for Hybrid Striped Bass. Right now, fish is the only commodity that is wide open"

One statistic that is truly staggering is that the second largest import for America, behind oil, is fish. With the hopes of changing that, Domer stated the Fish Farmers of Ohio Association. This allows the more than 200 fish farmers in the state to work together to solve problems and advance the fish farming in Ohio.

'He wanted a network of fish farmers so they could all get together and help each other," said Richard Georgeone, assistant manager of Blue Ribbon Farm Fish, "Marty's drive and dream has always been aquaculture. He and the others of the group aren't looking to make millions of dollars. They just want to promote aquaculture and use it to help struggling farms. Those farms could put ponds on their unused land and make money off it. That's what we want to get across."

Along with being a distributor and whole sale store, Blue Ribbon Farm Fish is also processing facility for aquaculture with the ability to handle up to three million pounds of fish.

"The idea and want for locally grown food has become something that the consumer now wants, and having the ability to not only raise and harvest fish locally and now have it processed locally is a great thing. Being able to process any of the agriculture goods we produce here in Ohio has been a shortcoming, so we're glad to see a facility such as this be built here in Ohio." said Greg Hargett, acting Assistant Director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Hargett was on hand, along with representatives of Congressman Zack Space's office, at the grand opening celebrations. "We have a little bit of everything here in Ohio when it comes to agriculture; agriculture is our single largest industry in Ohio bringing in more than 98 billion dollars."
